FKK To NUJ – ”I Have No Apology To Offer For My Utterances”
A former Minister of Aviation , Chief Femi Fani – Kayode, former Minister of Aviation has insisted that he is not going back on the derogatory words used against a journalist, Eyo Charles during a press conference in Calabar, the Cross River State capital .
The minister has been subjected to criticism over statement made in a video , which has since gone viral on the social media , where he was seen giving the Daily Trust reporter a dressing down for asking him a “ stupid question”.
The journalist was said to have asked Fani – Kayode who bankrolled his recent tour of some southern states.
The former minister , who was infuriated by the question , said the journalist was stupid. He further said he is going to ask the journalist employer to sack him and further threatened to make life unbearable for the reporter.
The viral video has been trending on social media for several hours with many condemning Fani- Kayode ’ s outburst .
However , some people defended Fani -Kayode ’ s response , insisting that the question was insulting .
However the Nigeria Union of Journalists condemned the former minister in a statement released by the union President , Chris Isiguzo , said it was ironic that Fani- Kayode who was highly critical of the government could take issue with simple questions and by denigrating the journalist , Fani – Kayode has exposed himself more as an intolerant person who will not want his activities closely scrutinised by the media.
The NUJ president further said that is instructive to remind the likes of Fani – Kayode that it is the constitutional right of journalists to monitor and keep a check on people and institutions in power and if he cannot bear with the watchdog role of the media, he should find himself a cave for an exile.
In reaction, the former minister said the journalist involved had apologised to him and the issue had been sorted out but however insisted that he owes no one apology for what happened because if the question were to be for Obasanjo or Donald Trump, he knew what their reaction would be.
