Breaking: Senate Suspends 774,000 Jobs Plan Over Minister Misconduct
The Nigeria Senate has announced the suspension of Special Public Works programme, a scheme meant to recruit a total of 774, 000 citizens which is under the National Directorate of Employment to cushion the effect of COVID- 19 pandemic.
Ajibola Bashir, the spokesperson for the Senate, announced the suspension of the programme at a press conference in Abuja.
He said that the National Assembly has summoned the Minister in charge of the Ministry to appear before the federal legislature , to explain the recruitment modalities.
In view of the foregoing , he said the implementation of the programme will be on hold pending proper briefing of the National Assembly by the Minister of Labour and Productivity.
This was coming after the senate and the Minister of State for Employment, Labour and Productivity, Festus Keyamo had had some disagreement over the modalities of the employment yesterday.
The scheme which had been approved by President Muhammadu Buhari will get engagement of 774,000 citizens (1000 people each from all the 774 local governments in the country) and they will be paid a stipend of N20,000 per month.
